Kovalam to Kanyakumari: Distance, Route, Cab Fare & Day Trip Plan

How far it is, which road to take, what the bus, train and taxi really involve, and a timed plan for a day trip from Kovalam to the southern tip of India.

Quick Answer: How Far Is Kovalam from Kanyakumari?

Kovalam to Kanyakumari is about 78 to 85 km by road, and the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours on NH66 via Balaramapuram, Neyyattinkara, Parassala, Marthandam and Nagercoil. A one-day return trip is realistic if you leave by 6 or 7 AM. Public buses and trains exist but need a change at Trivandrum; a private cab is the easiest way to add Padmanabhapuram Palace, Suchindram and the ferry on the same day.

If you are staying at Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach or Samudra Beach, the southern tip of India is closer than most guests realise. You are already at the far end of Kerala, and the Tamil Nadu border is a short drive away. This guide gives the Kovalam to Kanyakumari distance stop by stop, the route, the public transport options, honest fare guidance, and a timed day plan that works with the ferry and temple hours. For the wider picture, see our Kanyakumari distance chart for major cities, and for the same trip starting from the city centre, our Trivandrum to Kanyakumari day trip guide.

Kovalam to Kanyakumari Distance and Driving Time

Road distance depends on where in Kovalam you start and which route your driver picks, so published figures range from the high 70s to the high 80s of kilometres. For planning, use about 80 km and 2 to 2.5 hours, add time for the border and any toll queue, and let your map app have the last word on the day.

The same distance read the other way, Kanyakumari to Kovalam distance, is the same road and the same time. If you are searching for the distance between Kerala and Kanyakumari in general, note that Kanyakumari is the southern tip of Tamil Nadu and the Kerala border is only about 50 to 55 km north of the Cape, so any Kerala south-coast base is a manageable day trip. Thiruvananthapuram city is roughly 90 km away.

How to Reach Kanyakumari from Kovalam: The Route

There is really one sensible road. From the Kovalam junction you join the NH66 bypass and head south through Balaramapuram and Neyyattinkara to Parassala, the last town in Kerala. A few kilometres on you cross into Tamil Nadu at Kaliyikkavilai, then continue through Marthandam and Thuckalay to Nagercoil, and finally follow the Nagercoil to Kanyakumari road for the last 20 km or so. Our Nagercoil to Kanyakumari road guide covers that last stretch.

Some map apps will offer a coastal alternative through Vizhinjam, Poovar and the fishing villages. It looks tempting, but the roads are narrower, pass through village centres and are slower in practice. Use it only if you want to stop at Poovar anyway. The main road is smoother, and the landscape changes as you drive: coconut groves give way to paddy fields, then palmyra and windmills as you near the Cape.

Trivandrum to Tamil Nadu Border Distance

Many travellers search for the Trivandrum to Tamil Nadu border distance because they want to know how long Kerala lasts. From Thiruvananthapuram city the border at Parassala and Kaliyikkavilai is roughly 35 to 40 km, about an hour in normal traffic. From Kovalam, about 16 km south of the city centre, it is a little closer, roughly 30 to 40 km depending on where you start. Past the border it is another 50 km or so to Kanyakumari. The first Tamil town you drive through is already in Kanyakumari district.

What happens at the border

For private cars the crossing is usually uneventful: you pass the inter-state checkpoint area without a formal passport-style check. Carry a photo ID for every adult and your booking details anyway. The change is visible within minutes, with Malayalam signboards giving way to Tamil ones.

Permits and tax for taxis

A cab that crosses a state line needs the right permit, and each state has its own tourist-vehicle rules. A Kerala-registered tourist cab entering Tamil Nadu is normally covered by a permit or tax payment arranged by the operator, and the cost is usually folded into the quote. Rules and fees change, and in late 2025 Kerala and Tamil Nadu were in public disputes over taxes on interstate tourist buses, so we will not quote a fee here. What you should do is simple: ask your operator whether the fare includes the Tamil Nadu permit, tolls and parking, and be wary of a quote that adds these only at the border. Our own driver network quotes all-inclusive, as explained in the Trivandrum airport to Kanyakumari cab guide.

Kovalam to Kanyakumari by bus

We could not find a reliable listing of a direct Kovalam to Kanyakumari bus, so plan on two legs. Take a local bus or auto from Kovalam to Thampanoor (the Trivandrum Central bus stand) or to Neyyattinkara, then board a KSRTC or TNSTC service to Nagercoil or Kanyakumari. Buses on this corridor are frequent through the day, but the Kovalam-side connection is the weak link, so leave early and ask at the stand. A change at Nagercoil's bus stand is common. Our how to reach Kanyakumari guide has more on the bus network.

Kovalam to Kanyakumari by train

The nearest big station is Trivandrum Central, about 13 km from Kovalam, a 30-minute taxi or auto ride. From there several daily trains run south through Parassala to Nagercoil and the Kanyakumari terminus, about 2.5 to 3 hours to the Cape and roughly an hour to Nagercoil. Timetables shift, so check IRCTC for the day, and see our Nagercoil Junction guide for what to do on arrival. A train works best one way: ride south in the morning and return by cab or bus after sunset.

Kovalam to Kanyakumari by taxi: what it costs

The honest answer is that a Kovalam pickup is quoted individually. For reference, our driver network lists ₹2,400 to ₹2,700 for a sedan and ₹3,600 to ₹4,200 for an Innova for the 90 km one-way airport transfer, and a full-day Cape circuit in a sedan at ₹2,400 to ₹2,800, with Tempo Traveller options for larger groups. Kovalam sits slightly closer to the Cape than the airport does, but a same-day round trip adds a long return drive and driver time, so expect a quote in the same band rather than a cheaper one. Fuel, tolls, driver allowance and permits are included in our quotes; you pay for entry tickets and meals. The full chart is in our sightseeing cab booking guide.

Kovalam to Kanyakumari Day Trip: A Realistic Timed Plan

A day trip from Kovalam works, but not as a checklist of every sight. Padmanabhapuram Palace opens at 9 AM and is closed on Mondays. The Vivekananda Rock ferry runs from 8 AM to 4 PM. Suchindram is open 4:30 to 11:30 AM and 5 to 8:30 PM. Those windows do not line up perfectly, so pick a theme. Here is the plan we would give a Kovalam resort guest.

Plan A: The Cape day (leave Kovalam at 6:00 AM)

Time Stop Why then
6:00 AMLeave Kovalam, NH66 southLight traffic through Neyyattinkara and the border
7:45 AMSuchindram Thanumalayan TempleMorning session ends 11:30 AM; men wear a dhoti
9:00 AMKanyakumari jetty, ferry queueFerry from 8 AM; queues grow later in the morning
9:30 to 12:00Vivekananda Rock, Thiruvalluvar statue, glass bridge₹100 Normal or ₹300 Special Entry per person
12:30 PMLunch, Gandhi Memorial, Bhagavathy Amman areaEscape the midday sun
3:30 PMVattakottai Fort (about 7 km from the Cape)Best light from 4 PM; a quiet granite sea fort
5:15 PMSunset Point, KanyakumariSunset is around 6 PM in winter, a little later in summer
6:50 PMRajaGopal Sweet Stall, Asambu Road, VadaseryOn your way home anyway; halwa, Mysore pak and vacuum-packed chips for the road (open till 9 PM)
7:15 PMDrive back to KovalamArrive about 9:15 PM

It is a long day: about 4.5 hours in the car plus the Cape itself. If you want the onion-cashew pakoda hot from the kadai, swap Vattakottai for an earlier stop in Vadasery: the fresh batch comes out at 4:00 PM, and Nagercoil is about 35 minutes from the Cape. For distances to every other town, see our Kanyakumari distance chart. Read our one-day Kanyakumari itinerary for what to do at each stop, the ferry booking handbook for the slot system, and the glass bridge guide for the bridge, which you reach only on the ferry. Fees are in the ticket prices guide, and the sunset and boating guide covers the evening.

Plan B: The heritage swap (leave Kovalam at 6:45 AM)

If you would rather see a royal palace than a ferry queue, swap the morning. Reach Padmanabhapuram Palace in Thuckalay for the 9 AM opening, spend an hour and a half in the timber halls, and carry on to Kanyakumari by midday. You will miss Suchindram's morning session, so skip it or return for the evening session if you stay late. The palace is closed on Mondays, so on a Monday use Plan A. If you want waterfalls, see Thirparappu Falls, but it adds time you do not have on a one-day return.

Plan C: Sunrise at the Cape

Sunrise is best at Triveni Sangam between 5:45 and 6:15 AM, with the clearest views from October to March. From Kovalam that means leaving at about 3:30 to 3:45 AM, which is realistic only with a rested driver and a hotel that will let you out. Most Kovalam guests find it easier to stay a night in Kanyakumari or Nagercoil. Our sunrise guide explains how to time it.

Plan D: Skip the Sunset Point crowd

Sunset Point gets crowded in season. If you prefer a quieter evening, stay on at Vattakottai (best between 4 and 5:30 PM) and watch the light change over the sea and the Western Ghats from the ramparts, then head straight home through Nagercoil. You save about 30 minutes of driving and reach Kovalam earlier.

Worthwhile Stops Between Kovalam and the Cape

Vizhinjam

Three or four kilometres from Kovalam, Vizhinjam is a working fishing harbour with colourful boats and an early-morning fish landing. It is also home to the new deepwater container port. Five minutes at the harbour wall is worth it if you are leaving early.

Poovar backwaters

About 17 to 20 km from Kovalam, Poovar is where a river meets the sea, with mangrove-lined backwaters and boat rides. It is a good half-day on its own, so do it as a separate trip rather than adding it to a Cape day.

Padmanabhapuram, Thuckalay and Suchindram

The palace is the best non-coastal sight on the route, and Suchindram's Thanumalayan temple is the best temple stop: musical pillars, an 18-foot Hanuman statue and a strict dress code. Check current hours before you go, as festival days change them. If you want to see more coastline once you cross the border, our beaches of Kanyakumari district guide shows what is on offer.

Tips for Resort Guests Doing the Day Trip

  • Go early, return after dark. The main highway is fine at night, but ask your driver whether they are rested. A night at the Cape is kinder if you can manage it.
  • Dress for the temple. Suchindram asks men to wear a dhoti. Carry a shawl or dupatta in the car for modest cover.
  • Carry some cash. Ferry tickets are sold at the counter or on the official portal, and small shops are cash-first. Our ferry handbook explains both.
  • Sea weather. The ferry depends on the sea. If it is paused, the Cape still has the Bhagavathy Amman temple, the Gandhi Memorial and the beach.
  • Mind the Monday. Padmanabhapuram Palace is closed on Mondays.
  • Ask what the quote includes. Many Kovalam hotels arrange cabs, but prices vary. Check tolls, permits and waiting time.

Pick Up Snacks in Vadasery on the Way Back

We have been on Asambu Road in Vadasery, Nagercoil, since 1965, and the drive home on a Plan A day goes right past our counter. The best reason to stop is the fresh onion-cashew pakoda at 4:00 PM, fried in pure cold-pressed groundnut oil. For the journey home, travel-safe options are vacuum-packed Nendran banana chips (3 to 4 weeks shelf life) at ₹100 for 250 g and pure cow ghee wheat halwa (15 to 20 days) at ₹160 for 250 g. We use no preservatives and no artificial colours. See our Vadasery pakoda page for details, and our Kanyakumari tour packages if you would rather have a driver plan the day. The one-day sightseeing car package includes a welcome snack box.
