We have been answering this question across a counter for sixty years. Someone walks into the shop in Vadasery with a suitcase still in hand, buys a packet of chips, and asks how much longer to the Cape. Or they telephone from Madurai wanting to know whether to drive through the night. So this page is simply the answer we give: how to reach Kanyakumari from wherever you are starting, with honest distances and honest hours, not the optimistic ones printed on booking sites.

One thing worth knowing before anything else. Kanyakumari is the tip of the country, which means every route ends there — nothing passes through. Whichever way you come, the last stretch runs through our district, past Nagercoil, through the windmills, and out onto the headland where three seas meet.

Kanyakumari Distance from Major Cities

Road distances first, since that is what most people are really asking when they type "kanyakumari distance". These are approximate driving distances and realistic driving times, including the tea stops that everyone takes and nobody plans for.

Treat these as honest approximations rather than promises. The Madurai–Tirunelveli–Nagercoil corridor is fast four-lane driving; the Kerala coastal side is slower than its distance suggests, because the road threads through towns almost the whole way.

Reaching Kanyakumari by Train

Here is the thing nobody tells first-time visitors: Kanyakumari station (code CAPE) is a beautiful little terminus with the buffers pointing at the sea, but it is small, and only a handful of long-distance trains actually run all the way down the spur. The real gateway is Nagercoil Junction (NCJ), twenty kilometres inland, where three lines meet — the coastal line from Kerala, the main line from Tirunelveli and Madurai, and the short branch to the Cape. The services worth knowing by name:

• 16526 Island Express — the overnight run from KSR Bengaluru to Kanyakumari, roughly 944 km in about 18 hours 40 minutes, and the standard choice for anyone travelling from Bangalore.
• Chennai Egmore services — several overnight trains connect Egmore with Nagercoil and Kanyakumari via Trichy, Madurai and Tirunelveli. Board in the evening, wake up in the deep south; this remains the most sensible way to cover the Chennai–Kanyakumari distance.
• 12641/12642 Thirukkural Express — the long haul between Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin) and Kanyakumari, about 2,900 km in roughly 47 hours.
• Kerala-side trains — frequent services along the coastal line from Thiruvananthapuram Central through Nagercoil, useful if you are flying into Trivandrum.

A practical note from watching the platforms for decades: trains terminating at Nagercoil Junction are often shunted to the far platform, so allow extra minutes with luggage. And if you are heading out on one of the long-distance runs, buy your journey food before you board rather than on it — the regulars carry sealed packets from the Vadasery market side of town, ten minutes away by auto, because a three-day train ride is no place to discover that platform snacks were fried last week.

Kashmir to Kanyakumari: The Long-Haul Trains

"Kashmir to Kanyakumari" is a phrase Indians grow up with, and two trains make it literal.

The Himsagar Express (16317/16318) runs weekly between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra in Jammu and Kashmir and Kanyakumari — around 3,790 km, close to three full days on board, and the greatest number of states crossed by any single Indian train. Snow to sea, as the name says: him and sagar.

The Vivek Express, meanwhile, holds the record for sheer distance: Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari, roughly 4,150 km in about 74 hours, introduced in 2011 for Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary — fitting, given that the memorial on the rock offshore is exactly where he sat and meditated.

Both terminate at that small station by the sea, which is why the Kanyakumari platform occasionally holds a carriage-load of travellers stepping out into salt air after three days. We have packed a great many parcels for the return leg of those journeys. Vacuum-sealed Nendran banana chips and dry savouries genuinely survive seventy hours in a sleeper coach; anything syrupy does not.

Reaching Kanyakumari by Air

Kanyakumari has no airport of its own. Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), about 95 km away in Thiruvananthapuram, is the practical choice — international and domestic flights, and a straightforward two-and-a-half to three hour taxi ride down the coast. Prepaid taxis are available at the terminal, and most hotels in Kanyakumari and Nagercoil will arrange a pickup if you ask a day ahead. The alternatives: Tuticorin Airport (TCR) is nearer in kilometres, around 115 km, but has a thin schedule and works only if a flight happens to suit you. Madurai Airport (IXM), about 230 km north, has far better connectivity and is a reasonable option if you plan to see Madurai anyway and drive down. Reaching Kanyakumari by Road & Bus

Kanyakumari is the southern terminus of NH44, India's longest national highway — 3,745 km from Srinagar to the Cape. That is the literal Kashmir-to-Kanyakumari highway, and the milestone at the end of it is a photograph in a great many family albums.

State transport buses run in from everywhere: overnight services from Chennai and Bangalore, frequent day buses from Madurai and Tirunelveli, and a steady stream of KSRTC and TNSTC buses from Thiruvananthapuram. Private sleeper coaches cover the long routes overnight too. Almost all of them pass through Nagercoil, and many travellers break the journey there — it has more hotels, more food, and a shorter walk to everything. The final twenty kilometres are the best part. The Nagercoil to Kanyakumari road runs through the Muppandal wind farm, where hundreds of turbines stand over paddy fields and the Western Ghats gap funnels wind straight off the Arabian Sea. Buses on this stretch leave every few minutes; an auto or taxi takes 30 to 40 minutes.

Which Route Should You Take?

Coming from the Rameswaram side, the coastal run through Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin and Tiruchendur is longer than the inland highway but far more interesting, tying together two pilgrimage ends of Tamil Nadu in one drive. Our Rameswaram to Kanyakumari road trip guide sets out the stops.

Coming from Kerala, the drive down from Thiruvananthapuram crosses the border at Kaliyakkavilai and changes character within a few kilometres — coconut groves give way to paddy, the language on the shopfronts switches, and Padmanabhapuram Palace sits right on the route.

Coming from Madurai or Chennai, stay on NH44 through Tirunelveli. It is the fastest approach, and it delivers you into Nagercoil, which is where the practical part of the trip begins.

Whichever way you arrive, the last stop before you turn for home tends to be the market stretch in Vadasery.
