2. From Trivandrum & Padmanabhaswamy Temple (The Most Common Route)

The 90 km run down NH66 from Trivandrum is the busiest approach to the Cape — and slower than the distance suggests, because the highway threads through Kerala border towns before opening up after Kaliyikkavila. Budget a solid 2 to 2.5 hours. Starting from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the old city, it is about 87 km; leave by 6 AM and you can comfortably do temple darshan and the Cape in one day. The full plan, with stops at Suchindram and Nagercoil, is in our Trivandrum to Kanyakumari day trip guide.

3. From Rameshwaram (The Pilgrim Corridor)

The Rameshwaram–Kanyakumari leg is the classic South Indian pilgrimage double: about 310 km and 6 to 7 hours by road through Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Nagercoil. There is no direct train, so most travellers drive or take an overnight bus. The best month for the combined circuit is October to March. Route details, break points, and what to eat on the way are in the Rameshwaram to Kanyakumari road trip guide.

4. Trains, Buses & the Nearest Airport

  • Air: Trivandrum International (TRV) is the nearest airport, ~95 km / 2.5 hours. Prepaid taxis and KSRTC/TNSTC buses run all day.
  • Rail: Kanyakumari (CAPE) is India's southernmost terminus, but Nagercoil Junction (NCJ), 15 km away, has far more connections — most long-distance trains stop there.
  • Bus: TNSTC and SETC services connect the Cape to Trivandrum, Madurai, Chennai, and Tirunelveli around the clock.

Complete transport options are covered in How to Reach Kanyakumari, and the Nagercoil-to-Cape final stretch in the Nagercoil–Kanyakumari road guide.

6. The One Stop Every Route Has in Common

Whether you come down NH66 from Trivandrum, NH44 from Madurai, or the pilgrim road from Rameshwaram, every route funnels through Nagercoil in the last 20 km. That makes Vadasery, its old market quarter, the natural chai-and-snacks halt before the final run to the Cape — hot pakoda after 4 PM, fresh Nendran banana chips all day, and wheat halwa packed for the road home. See what the district is famous for before you stop.
