Vadasery Bus Stand, Nagercoil: Buses to Kanyakumari, Trivandrum & Madurai

Which stand for which bus, how far everything is, how to reach the railway stations, and what to pick up before you board. Written from a counter in Vadasery.

Quick Answer: What Is Vadasery Bus Stand?

Vadasery bus stand, officially Christopher bus stand, is Nagercoil's mofussil (long-route) terminus, on Balamore Road in Vadasery. Buses to other Tamil Nadu districts and to Kerala start here, and town routes 1, 2 and 303 run from here to Kanyakumari, about 21 km away. Nagercoil's other terminus, Anna bus stand on Cape Road, mainly handles local town buses.

We have sold banana chips and sweets in Vadasery since 1965, a short walk from the bus stand. Travellers passing through want to know the same four things: which stand, how far, how long and how often. This page answers them as plainly as we can, with official route listings where they exist and honest ranges where they do not. Bus timings in Tamil Nadu change without much notice, so treat every time here as a guide and confirm at the stand.

Vadasery, Vadacherry or Christopher? Getting the Names Straight

First, the spelling. Vadasery is a neighbourhood of Nagercoil, the headquarters of Kanyakumari district. You will see it written Vadasery, Vadassery, Vadachery and Vadacherry; the district administration itself uses more than one of these. They are all the same place.

Second, the bus stand. Nagercoil has two bus terminals. The Nagercoil corporation lists them as Christopher bus stand, in Vadasery on Balamore Road, and Anna bus stand, on Cape Road. Hardly anyone says "Christopher" out loud. Conductors shout "Vadasery", booking sites print "Vadasery bus stand" or "Vadachery", and locals say the same. If a ticket or an app shows any of those names, it means this stand.

Third, the neighbourhood is more than a bus stand. Vadasery is Nagercoil's market quarter: the big vegetable, fish and meat markets, gold and textile shops, and the food shops of Asambu Road, where we are. Our short history of Vadasery market explains how a weekly santhai became the town's everyday bazaar. If you are searching for Vadasery market Nagercoil, you are in the right neighbourhood: the market and the bus stand share it.

Vadasery Bus Stand vs Anna Bus Stand: Which Stand for Which Bus?

The Kanniyakumari district website sums it up in one line: the bus terminus takes the mofussil routes and the town bus stand takes the local routes. In practice:

  • Vadasery (Christopher) bus stand: long-route buses to other districts of Tamil Nadu and to parts of Kerala start here. Think Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Chennai, and the Kerala side. Several busy town routes also start here and run through Anna bus stand on their way south.
  • Anna bus stand (Cape Road): the town-bus hub. Local routes fan out from here to the coast, the villages and the suburbs.

The useful thing to know is that the two stands are linked by a constant stream of town buses, and many routes call at both. If you are unsure, go to Vadasery for anything long-distance and to Anna for anything local, and ask the conductor before you sit down. People here are used to being asked.

Vadasery to Kanyakumari Distance, Buses and Return Bus Timings

The Vadasery to Kanyakumari distance is about 21 km; Tamil Nadu Tourism gives exactly that figure for Vadasery bus stand on its Vivekananda Rock Memorial page. The Kanyakumari to Vadasery distance is, of course, the same, though the return can feel longer if you catch a bus that wanders through every village.

The district administration lists routes 1, 2 and 303 from Vadasery terminal to Kanyakumari, running via Anna bus stand, Kottar and Suchindram, and the same numbers from Anna terminal. In real life you will also see plenty of other buses with Kanyakumari (கன்னியாகுமரி) on the board. Are the buses frequent? Yes: this is one of the busiest corridors in the district, and through the day you rarely wait long. A town bus takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour with stops; a taxi or auto does it in 30 to 40 minutes. Our guide to the Nagercoil to Kanyakumari road describes what you will see out of the window, windmills and all.

Return bus timings matter most on a day trip. We will not print a "last bus" time, because we cannot vouch for one that stays true. What we can say: buses back from Kanyakumari run often until the evening, so staying for the sunset is normally fine. After dark the gaps get longer. If you are planning a late return, ask at Kanyakumari bus stand when you arrive, not when you are leaving, and save a taxi number as a backup. If you are still working out how the two places relate, read is Nagercoil and Kanyakumari the same? first.

Doing it as a day trip? Remember that the Vivekananda Rock ferry runs from about 8 AM to 4 PM, with tickets at ₹100 Normal or ₹300 Special Entry (Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, October 2026). An early bus from Vadasery gets you into the queue before it builds. Our ferry booking handbook has the details, and how to reach Kanyakumari covers trains and flights too.

Vadasery to Nagercoil Junction Railway Station (and Nagercoil Town Station)

Nagercoil has two railway stations, and people mix them up all the time.

  • Nagercoil Junction (NCJ) is the main station, on Railway Feeder Road in the Kottar area. Long-distance trains from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and the north stop or end here. From Vadasery bus stand it is about 3 to 4 km, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by auto. Agree the auto fare before you sit; autos here rarely run on the meter. Town buses also run between the bus stands and the station if you are travelling light. Our Nagercoil Junction railway guide covers the station itself.
  • Nagercoil Town (NJT) is a smaller station on the Thiruvananthapuram line, between Aaloor and Nagercoil Junction, and it sits close to Vadasery bus stand. Fewer trains stop, but if your ticket says NJT, you are in luck: it is the nearer one to Vadasery.

Check your ticket for the station code. Turning up at NCJ for a train that only calls at NJT (or the reverse) is a classic Nagercoil mistake, and in evening traffic the hop between them is not something to leave to the last ten minutes.

Buses to Trivandrum, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Chennai

Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram): about 70 km up the old NH 47 corridor (now NH 66) through Thuckalay and Marthandam. Both Tamil Nadu (TNSTC) and Kerala (KSRTC) buses work the route. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours; the border towns can be slow. For Trivandrum airport, a taxi is far less hassle with luggage; see our Trivandrum airport cab guide.

Tirunelveli and Madurai: buses head north on NH 44 through Aralvaimozhi, the pass where the Western Ghats drop to the plains. Tirunelveli is about two hours; Madurai about five to six. These are the bread-and-butter routes of Vadasery bus stand, with plenty of ordinary and express services through the day.

Chennai: about 700 km, an overnight run of 12 to 14 hours. State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) operates the long-distance services, and in Chennai most government buses from the south now use the Kilambakkam terminus (KCBT) rather than the old Koyambedu stand. Book these ahead.

Booking online: tnstc.in

Government long-distance buses, including SETC, can be booked on the official TNSTC online reservation site, tnstc.in, and through its app. The site also offers booking on WhatsApp. Search Nagercoil as the starting point and check the boarding point printed on your ticket. Ordinary town buses and most short mofussil runs are not reserved: you board, sit, and buy a ticket from the conductor. Keep small notes and coins.

Nagercoil to Thirparappu, Lemur Beach and Mandaikadu by Bus

Thirparappu Falls is about 42 km away. The district lists routes 313A, 341 and 350 from Vadasery terminal via Thuckalay and Thiruvattar, and route 350 from Anna terminal via Thuckalay and Kulasekharam. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Our Nagercoil to Thirparappu route and cab guide has the full table.

Nagercoil to Lemur Beach: Lemur Beach is at Ganapathipuram, about 13 km away on the south coast. There is no bus to the sand itself. The district lists route 14D from Vadasery via Anna bus stand and Rajakkamangalam towards Muttom, which takes you along that stretch of coast; ask the conductor for Ganapathipuram, then take an auto for the last bit. Honestly, an auto or two-wheeler from Nagercoil is simpler. Details are in our Lemur Beach guide.

Nagercoil to Mandaikadu: the Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman temple stands near Colachel on the west coast, roughly 20 km from Vadasery. The district lists Colachel routes 564B, 565 and 576 from Vadasery via Parvathipuram and Thingal Nagar; ask for the Mandaikadu stop. During the Masi Kodai festival (February to March), extra buses run, including special services from Thiruvananthapuram, and the roads get very busy.

Practical Tips for Using Vadasery Bus Stand

  • Read the Tamil board. Destination boards are often in Tamil only. Learn the shape of கன்னியாகுமரி (Kanyakumari) and நாகர்கோவில் (Nagercoil), or simply ask: "Kanyakumari poguma?" (does it go to Kanyakumari?).
  • Morning is easiest. Buses fill quickly at office and school times, roughly 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. Mid-morning and early afternoon are calmer.
  • Monsoon months. October to December brings the northeast monsoon. Keep an umbrella for the walk between bays; see monsoon in Nagercoil.
  • Facilities. There is a pay-and-use toilet block beside the bays. For cloak rooms and anything else, ask at the enquiry counter on the day.
  • Prefer not to juggle buses? Travelling alone on a budget, buses are great; our Kanyakumari solo travel guide leans on them. With family, luggage or a tight sunrise, a car is simpler: see the Kanyakumari tour packages run through our local driver network (every package includes a complimentary Kumari Snacks welcome box).
