Nagercoil to Thirparappu Falls: Distance, Route, Bus & Cab Fare (From Vadasery)

The road via Thuckalay and Kulasekharam, the buses that run it, and what a cab costs.

Quick Answer: Nagercoil to Thirparappu Falls

Thirparappu Falls is about 42 km from Nagercoil and roughly 55 to 60 km from Kanyakumari, a drive of 1 to 1.5 hours via Villukuri, Thuckalay and Kulasekharam. Government buses (routes 313A, 341, 350) run from Vadasery and Anna bus stands. A private cab on the heritage and nature circuit starts around ₹2,900 for a sedan. The falls open about 6 AM to 6 PM.

This page is about getting there: the road, the buses and the cab fares. If you want to know what the falls look like, where to bathe and the history of the temple on the bank, read our Thirparappu Waterfalls guide first, or browse the waterfalls near Kanyakumari guide to compare options. Then come back here to plan the journey.

Most visitors we speak to at the shop on Asambu Road are starting from Vadasery or a Nagercoil hotel, so every direction below starts there.

Nagercoil to Thirparappu Falls: Distance and Travel Time

The Kanyakumari district tourism listing gives about 42 km from Nagercoil. Some travel sites quote 35 km and others up to 50 to 60 km, because they measure from different starting points and by different roads. In practice, budget about an hour to an hour and a half by car from Nagercoil, a little more in the monsoon or on a festival Sunday.

Vadasery to Thirparappu Falls: The Road, Step by Step

Vadasery sits on the eastern side of Nagercoil, on the Kanyakumari road, so the first job is to cross the town westwards and pick up the Trivandrum highway. The route we give drivers is this:

  1. Vadasery to the highway. Come down towards the Nagercoil town centre and join the Kanyakumari to Trivandrum highway (NH 66) heading north towards Thuckalay.
  2. Villukuri and Thuckalay. Pass Villukuri and continue to Thuckalay, about 20 km from Nagercoil. The Padmanabhapuram Palace is here, and the Thuckalay bus stop is the usual place to change if you are on public transport.
  3. Thuckalay to Kulasekharam. Leave the highway on the state road towards Kulasekharam, through rubber plantations and small hamlets. This stretch is narrow in places, so lorries and buses need patience.
  4. Kulasekharam to Thirparappu. Follow the signboards for Thirparappu, passing Thiruvattar side roads. Parking is a short walk from the entrance.

Road numbers and exact junctions change, so use a maps app live on the day and treat our description as a sanity check. An alternative follows the Thiruvattar side, which is how several of the Vadasery buses run, adding time but also the chance to see Mathur.

Nagercoil to Thirparappu Bus: Routes and What to Expect

Public buses do run, and they are the cheapest way to go. The Kanyakumari district website lists these services to Thirparappu:

Boarding pointRoute number (district listing)Via
Nagercoil Vadasery bus terminal313A, 341, 350Thuckalay and Thiruvattar
Nagercoil Anna bus terminal350Nagercoil, Thuckalay, Kulasekharam
Kanyakumari bus terminal350Through Nagercoil
Marthandam bus terminal89A, PHS-32, 458Attoor and Thiruvattar

Frequency and fares change with the timetable, and we could not find a published fare chart, so check the board at the stand. As a rule of thumb, an ordinary government bus takes about 1.5 to 2 hours from Nagercoil because it stops at every village, and the fare is a low two-digit sum in rupees. Services thin out after early evening, so plan to leave Thirparappu by 4:30 PM at the latest if you want to be back in Nagercoil in daylight. Kanyakumari visitors can board route 350 directly, but the first bus is early, so confirm the timing at the Cape bus terminal the evening before.

If you are arriving by train, our Nagercoil Junction guide explains how to reach the bus stands from the station.

Kanyakumari to Thirparappu Falls Distance and Route

From the Cape the distance is roughly 55 to 60 km. Drive up the highway to Nagercoil (about 20 km), cross the town and follow the Vadasery route above. A private car takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so a day trip from Kanyakumari means an early start. Many families fit it between the Cape sights and the palace; our 3-day family tour does exactly that, and the Kanyakumari with kids guide explains why the shallow pools make Thirparappu a good children's stop.

Thirparappu Falls Cab Fare from Nagercoil and Kanyakumari

A taxi lets you stop at Padmanabhapuram and Mathur on the way and leave when you want. Through our Kumari Snacks driver network, Thirparappu is usually combined in the heritage and nature circuit rather than sold as a bare transfer. These are the indicative 2026 figures from our sightseeing cab booking guide; fuel, driver allowance, tolls and parking are included.

Thirparappu Falls Timings and Entry Fee

The district administration lists the falls as open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Another reference gives 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, so plan to arrive by early afternoon and confirm at the gate. The entry ticket is small, reported at roughly ₹5 to ₹10 per person, with separate charges for parking and the changing room. We could not find an official fee notice, so keep some change ready and expect the amounts to differ. Pedal-boat charges depend on the boat and the length of the ride; our attraction guide notes the usual range. For an official answer, the Thirparappu Town Panchayat (04651-277156) and the district tourism office handle enquiries.

Best Season for the Thirparappu Route

  • June to September (south-west monsoon): the strongest flow. Bathing can be stopped on days of heavy rain and roads near Kulasekharam get slippery.
  • October to December (north-east monsoon): the sweet spot. Good flow, green hills and fewer closures. This is the season most readers of this page will be travelling in.
  • January to May: reduced flow, but the road is dry and the pool is usually swimmable.

Landmarks on the Way: Padmanabhapuram, Mathur and Chitharal

The route is half the fun, and three stops fit without a big detour:

  • Padmanabhapuram Palace, Thuckalay: the teak-wood palace of the Travancore rulers, open 9 AM to 4:30 PM and closed on Mondays. Allow 1.5 hours. See the palace guide.
  • Mathur Hanging Trough: a famous high aqueduct near Thiruvattar. It is a short detour with a parking area and a view over the paddy fields. Read the Mathur Aqueduct guide.
  • Chitharal Jain monuments: a hilltop of rock-cut Jain sculptures that adds an hour. Details in the Chitharal guide.

One-Day Combo: Thirparappu, Mathur, Padmanabhapuram and a 4 PM Pakoda Stop

This is the order we suggest to guests starting from Vadasery. It works best on Tuesday to Sunday because the palace is closed on Mondays.

TimeStopWhy
8:00 AMLeave Vadasery or your hotelCool roads, falls less crowded
9:00 AMPadmanabhapuram Palace, ThuckalayOpens 9 AM; closed Mondays, so on a Monday go straight to Mathur and do the palace another day

If you want to see more of the district after this, the hidden gems near Nagercoil guide lists more places on the same side of the district. Nature lovers can add the Pechiparai and Perunchani dam area, or the longer Ulakkai Aruvi waterfalls trek on a separate day.

What to Pack and Where to Eat

  • A towel, a spare set of clothes and a plastic bag for the wet ones.
  • Non-slip footwear. The rocks are slick and the railed bathing area is the only safe zone.
  • Cash in small notes for tickets, parking, changing rooms and boats.
  • A water bottle and sunscreen, because the stretch between Thuckalay and Kulasekharam has little shade at noon.

For food, small restaurants in Thuckalay and Kulasekharam serve meals and tea, and roadside stalls fry banana fritters. Save your appetite for Vadasery on the way back. Our onion-cashew pakoda comes out hot at 4 PM at the counter on Asambu Road; see Vadasery pakoda and the history of Vadasery market if you have time to stroll the lanes.
