What Does Nendran Mean? The Nendran Banana Explained

The word, the English name, how to recognise one, what it is cooked into, and why it is the only banana we fry into chips.

Quick Answer: What Is the Meaning of Nendran?

Nendran (Malayalam നേന്ത്രൻ, Tamil நேந்திரன்) is the name of a large, starchy cooking banana grown in Kerala and Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari district. In English it is the Nendran plantain, a French plantain type of the Musa AAB group. Raw and green, it is fried into banana chips; ripe, it is steamed, made into fritters or fed to babies.

This is a dictionary-style page: what the word means, what the fruit is, and how to tell it apart. We fry Nendran into chips every day in Nagercoil, so we have opinions, but we have kept the deeper stories on their own pages. For the farming side, read why Nendran bananas taste different in Kanyakumari. For a chips-only comparison, see Nendran vs regular banana chips. Nendran Meaning: The Word and Its Many Names

"Nendran" is simply the name of the variety, the way "Alphonso" names a mango. You will meet it under several spellings and local words:

  • Nendran / Nenthran / Nendram: the same Malayalam name in different English spellings. In Tamil it is written நேந்திரன் (Nēnthiran), and in Kanyakumari markets you will hear "nenthiram pazham".
  • Ethakka: Malayalam for the raw, green Nendran. Kerala recipes that call for "ethakka" mean raw Nendran.
  • Ethapazham: Malayalam for the ripe Nendran (pazham = ripe fruit). Tamil speakers say "nendran pazham".
  • Nendran plantain / Kerala plantain: the usual English names. India's National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB, Tiruchirappalli) lists it as "Nendran, AAB, French plantain".
  • Nethra / Nethran banana: a common misspelling in searches. It means the same fruit.

So when someone asks "banana nendran meaning" or "what does Nendran banana mean", the honest answer is: it is not a translation of a word like "big" or "long"; it is the proper name of one specific banana, the one that Kerala and Kanyakumari cook with.

What Kind of Banana Is Nendran? The Botany in Plain English

Edible bananas are grouped by their genetic make-up from two wild ancestors, shown as letters (A and B). Sweet dessert bananas like the Cavendish are mostly AAA. Nendran is AAB, which places it in the Plantain subgroup, the starchy cooking bananas of Africa, the Caribbean and South India.

Within plantains there are two broad shapes. Horn plantains lose their male flowers early and bear a few very large, horn-like fingers. French plantains keep the male bud longer and carry more, slightly smaller fingers. Nendran is a French-type plantain. ICAR-NRCB describes it as a dual-purpose plantain with a crop duration of about 10–11 months, bunches of roughly 12–15 kg with 4–6 hands, and orange-tinted pulp that stays starchy even when ripe, so it is normally cooked. Recognised local types include Manjeri Nendran, Chengalikodan, Attu Nendran, Quintal Nendran and Swarnamukhi.

How to Identify a Nendran Banana

In a Nagercoil or Thiruvananthapuram market, these are the giveaways:

  • Size: noticeably longer and thicker than a dessert banana, often a hand-span long, with a gentle curve and a blunt, tapering tip.
  • Angles: distinct ridges running along the finger, so it looks three- or four-sided rather than round. These stay visible even when ripe.
  • Peel: thick and tough. Green when raw; yellow with black patches when ripe. A ripe Nendran with plenty of black spots is fine, not spoiled.
  • Flesh: firm and starchy. Raw, it is pale cream and hard enough to slice like a potato. Ripe, it turns a warm yellow-orange, deeper than any Cavendish.
  • Bunch: fewer, heavier hands than a dessert-banana bunch.

Nendran Banana vs Normal Banana: The Difference

"Normal banana" means different things in different parts of India, so here is Nendran next to the three you are most likely to know in South India:

Feature Nendran Cavendish (Robusta / Grand Naine) Poovan (Mysore) Rasthali (Silk)
GroupAAB, French plantainAAA, dessertAAB, dessertAAB, dessert
Finger shapeLong, thick, clearly ridgedMedium-long, smooth, curvedSmall, plumpMedium, rounded

The key difference is starch against sugar. Raw Nendran is almost all starch, and starch fries crisp. Dessert bananas carry more free sugar, which caramelises and burns in hot oil before the slice dries out. That is the whole reason Kerala and Kanyakumari chips are made from Nendran. The deeper frying science is in our Nendran vs regular banana chips article.

Raw Nendran vs Ripe Nendran: How It Is Used

Raw (ethakka): green and starchy

  • Banana chips: sliced thin and fried with salt and turmeric. In Malayalam, upperi or kaya varuthathu. This is what "Nendran chips" means; in English they are simply plantain chips or Kerala banana chips.
  • Sharkara upperi: thicker chips coated in jaggery and dry ginger, an Onam sadhya fixture.
  • Curries: cubed raw Nendran goes into erissery, avial and mezhukkupuratti (dry stir-fry), and into puzhukku, a mash of boiled tubers and plantain with coconut.
  • Nendran flour: raw slices sun-dried and powdered, cooked as a porridge for babies, a traditional weaning food in Kerala homes.

Ripe (ethapazham): sweet, orange, still firm

  • Steamed Nendran: the whole fruit steamed in its skin and eaten warm, often for breakfast with tea. Soft, sweet and filling.
  • Pazham pori: ripe Nendran sliced lengthwise, dipped in a light batter and fried. Kerala's favourite tea-shop snack.
  • Baby food: steamed and mashed ripe Nendran is a traditional first food for infants.
  • Ghee-fried and sweets: slices fried in ghee with sugar, or cooked down into pazham varattiyathu (banana preserve).

Nendran Nutrition and Benefits (Including "Nethra Banana Benefits")

Published figures for Nendran vary with ripeness and the study, so treat the numbers below as approximate, per 100 g of fresh ripe pulp:

Per 100 g Ripe Nendran (approx.) Generic dessert banana (USDA)
Energyabout 110–120 kcal89 kcal
Carbohydrateabout 27–30 gabout 23 g
Dietary fibreabout 2–2.5 gabout 2.6 g
Protein / fatabout 1 g / under 1 gabout 1 g / under 0.5 g
Potassiumabout 300–550 mg (studies differ)358 mg
CarotenoidsNotable (orange pulp)Low

What that means in practice:

  • Filling energy: Nendran is denser than a dessert banana, which is why one steamed Nendran makes a breakfast in Kerala.
  • Resistant starch when raw: green plantain starch digests slowly, which is part of why raw Nendran dishes feel satisfying.
  • Potassium and carotenoids: the orange colour of ripe Nendran comes from carotenoids, the plant pigments the body can turn into vitamin A.

Nendran chips are a different matter: frying adds oil, so a 100 g bag is a treat, not a health food. If you want Nendran chips benefits in a fair light, the real ones are a short ingredient list and real plantain, not reconstituted potato. Our Nendran chips nutrition guide has the full numbers.

Banana Chips Famous in Which District? Why Kanyakumari Nendran Suits Chips

In Tamil Nadu the answer is Kanyakumari district, and Nagercoil in particular. Tamil Nadu agricultural sources list Kanyakumari among the main Nendran-growing districts of the state, alongside Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruchirappalli, and the district has had roughly 5,000–6,000 hectares under banana in recent records. Most of the Nendran grows along the Kerala border, where the same rain and red laterite soil that feed Kerala's plantations continue across the state line. (The district has a second famous banana too: the small, honey-sweet Matti, which received a Geographical Indication tag in 2023. It is eaten fresh, not fried.)

Three things make Kanyakumari Nendran good chip material:

  1. Short distance from farm to kadai. Bunches reach Nagercoil wholesale markets within a day of cutting, still hard and green.
  2. Mature but unripe fruit. Fully developed fingers have the most starch; a day or two too late and sugars start to rise.
  3. A frying tradition of its own. Kerala chips are fried in coconut oil. Nagercoil's older sweet shops fry in groundnut oil, which gives a cleaner, nuttier taste. Our Kerala vs Nagercoil banana chips comparison and why Nagercoil banana chips are famous go further.

How RajaGopal Sweet Stall Uses Raw Nendran

We have fried Nendran chips on Asambu Road in Vadasery since 1965, and the method has not changed much:

  • We buy raw green Nendran only, firm enough that the knife squeaks.
  • The fruit is peeled by hand and sliced ultra-thin straight into the oil, so the slices do not oxidise or soak up water.
  • We fry only in pure cold-pressed groundnut oil, with salt and a little turmeric. No preservatives, no colours, no flavour powders.
  • Chips are cooled, then packed in multi-layer, food-grade vacuum-sealed pouches that keep them crisp for 3–4 weeks.

Prices in 2026: ₹100 for 250 g, ₹200 for 500 g, ₹400 per kg, and ₹1,900 for a 5 kg bulk pack. See our Nendran banana chips page, the step-by-step how banana chips are made, and why we chose groundnut oil frying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of Nendran?

Nendran (Malayalam നേന്ത്രൻ, Tamil நேந்திரன்) is the name of a large, starchy banana variety grown in Kerala and Kanyakumari district. Botanically it is a French plantain type in the Musa AAB group. In Malayalam the raw fruit is also called ethakka and the ripe fruit ethapazham.

What are Nendran chips called in English?

In English, Nendran chips are simply called plantain chips or Kerala banana chips. They are thin slices of raw green Nendran plantain fried until crisp and seasoned with salt and turmeric. In Malayalam they are called upperi or kaya varuthathu.

What is the difference between Nendran banana and normal banana?

A Nendran is a plantain: longer, thicker-skinned, angular and starchy, with orange-tinted flesh that is usually cooked. A normal dessert banana such as Cavendish (Robusta or Grand Naine) is smaller, rounder, sweeter and eaten raw. Nendran's low sugar when green is why it fries into crisp, golden chips.

What are the benefits of Nendran (often searched as nethra banana)?

Nendran, sometimes misspelt nethra or nethran banana, is filling and energy-dense, with complex carbohydrates, dietary fibre, potassium and carotenoids that give the ripe flesh its orange colour. Raw green Nendran is rich in resistant starch. Steamed ripe Nendran and Nendran flour are traditional weaning foods in Kerala.

Are Nendran chips healthy?

Nendran chips are a fried snack, so they are calorie-dense and best eaten in moderation. Their advantages over packaged chips come from the ingredients: real raw plantain rather than reconstituted potato, a short ingredient list, and, at RajaGopal Sweet Stall, cold-pressed groundnut oil with no preservatives or colours.

Banana chips are famous in which district?

In Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari district, and especially Nagercoil, is famous for Nendran banana chips, thanks to the Nendran plantations along its Kerala border. In Kerala, banana chips are a staple everywhere, made from the same Nendran variety but usually fried in coconut oil.
