Perched high upon the promontory stands the historic Muttom Lighthouse, constructed by British colonial engineers in 1875 to guide steamships and merchant sailing vessels navigating the treacherous rocky shoals around Cape Comorin.

• Tower Structure: A 22-meter tall masonry round tower with distinctive white and black spiral bands.
• Focal Height: 43 meters above sea level, casting its light beam across 20 nautical miles into the open Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.
• View from the Top: The panoramic gallery offers a breathtaking vista overlooking the entire sweep of the Manakudy coastline to the east and Colachel port to the west.

The local district administration has developed a scenic cliffside promenade with sitting benches, safety perimeter fences, and thatched viewpoint umbrellas. The elevated vantage point provides an unobstructed horizon where the sun sinks directly into the open ocean without land obstruction.

Due to its rugged European-style coastal scenery, Muttom has served as the filming location for dozens of iconic Tamil and Malayalam movies (including classic scenes from Alaigal Oivathillai, Kadal, and numerous musical hits).

4. The Fishing Village & All Saints Church

Adjacent to the rocky cliffs lies the bustling centuries-old coastal hamlet of Muttom. Walk down to the fishing harbor to observe traditional wooden catamarans, fiber boats (*vallams*), and deep-sea gillnetters returning with fresh catches of seer fish, kingfish, prawns, and crabs. Towering above the village is the majestic Portuguese-style All Saints Church, whose white spires glow warmly in the late afternoon sun.

• Safety Notice: Never cross the warning fences or climb down wet, mossy boulders near the water's edge. The sudden rogue waves and strong undertows can be hazardous.

6. How to Reach Muttom Beach

• From Nagercoil: 16 km via Asaripallam → Thingalnagar → Muttom (approx. 30 minutes by car).
• From Kanyakumari: 32 km via the coastal West Coast Road or NH66.
• By Public Bus: Frequent direct town buses (Route 5C, 14, and Thingalnagar shuttles) depart from Nagercoil Vadasery and Anna bus stands.

7. Geological Wonder: The Red Laterite Cliffs

Geologically, the cliffs of Muttom are composed of dense, iron-rich red laterite and weathered Archaean granite that date back millions of years. Continuous wave erosion over millennia has carved deep sea caves, blowholes, and natural rock arches along the shore.

During low tide, marine biologists and curious travelers can observe natural tide pools trapped in the rock crevices, teeming with colorful sea anemones, hermit crabs, small starfish, and emerald sea moss.

8. Local Fishing Life & Coastal Cuisine

Muttom is home to an industrious seafaring community of traditional Mukkuvar fishermen. Every evening around 4:00 PM, dozens of colorful fiberglass boats return from deep-sea fishing grounds to land their catches right on the sandy cove below the lighthouse.

Local beachside shacks prepare fresh, shallow-fried fish caught just hours earlier — including king seer fish (*vanjaram*), red snapper (*sankara*), and squid (*kanava*) tossed with crushed garlic, curry leaves, and freshly ground black pepper.
