RajaGopal Sweet Stall is a family-run sweet and snack shop on Asambu Road, Vadasery, Nagercoil (629001), about 20 km from Kanyakumari, trading since 1965. It is open 9 AM to 9 PM every day. Come at 4 PM for hot onion-cashew pakoda and fresh jalebi, and take home vacuum-packed Nendran banana chips, ghee halwa or Mysore Pak. To have a pack waiting, WhatsApp +91-9790227409.
Most people who find this page typed something like "sweet shop near me" or "chips shop near me" on a phone somewhere between the cape and Nagercoil. This is our honest visitor's guide to our own shop: where it is, how to reach it from wherever you are staying, what is freshest at which hour, and what will survive the journey home. If you are reading from Chennai, Bangalore or further away, skip to the section on shipping. For the family history behind the counter, read our story since 1965.
Sweet Shop Near Kanyakumari: Where RajaGopal Sweet Stall Is
The full address is RajaGopal Sweet Stall, Asambu Road, Vadasery, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu 629001. Vadasery is the north-western part of Nagercoil, the side that faces the Thiruvananthapuram highway. It is known locally for two things: the Christopher bus stand, which is the long-distance (mofussil) bus terminus for Nagercoil, and the big wholesale market that has fed the district for generations (our Vadasery market history tells that story).
A point that confuses many visitors: Kanyakumari is both the name of the cape town and of the whole district. Our shop is in the district, but in Nagercoil, the district headquarters, not in the cape town itself. If you search "sweet shop near me" while standing at the Kanyakumari seafront, the shops that come up first will be the ones near the temple. We are a half-hour drive north, which is why most travellers stop with us on the way in or out. Our guide to whether Nagercoil and Kanyakumari are the same explains the geography.
The map below is the same one on our contact and directions page. Open it in Google Maps for turn-by-turn directions from your hotel.
How to Get to Our Shop: Distances and Travel Times
These are typical road distances and driving times, the sort of figures a map app shows on an ordinary day. Nagercoil traffic at school and office hours, festival days and rain can stretch them, so treat them as guides rather than promises.
| Starting point | Approx. road distance | Approx. time by car | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christopher (Vadasery) bus stand | Under 1 km | 5–10 min | Walkable; an auto is quicker with luggage |
| Nagercoil Junction (NCJ) railway station | 3–4 km | 10–20 min | Auto or taxi from the station forecourt |
| Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple | 7–9 km | 20–30 min | On the way between Kanyakumari and Nagercoil |
| Padmanabhapuram Palace (Thuckalay) | 15–17 km | 30–45 min | Same highway; Vadasery is on the palace side of town |
| Kanyakumari town (temple and seafront) | 20–22 km | 35–50 min | Buses run through the day to Nagercoil |
| Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) | 70–75 km | 1.5–2.5 hours | Via the NH 66 corridor; traffic around Thiruvananthapuram varies a lot |
From Kanyakumari
By taxi, the road runs north through Suchindram and the Nanjil Nadu paddy fields; our Nagercoil to Kanyakumari road guide lists the stops worth making. By bus, government buses run between Kanyakumari and Nagercoil all day. Some terminate at Anna bus stand in the centre of town and some continue to Vadasery, so ask the conductor for Vadasery. From the Vadasery stand, Asambu Road is a short walk.
From Nagercoil Junction railway station
The station sits on the south-eastern side of town and Vadasery is on the north-western side, so you cross the centre. An auto takes 10–20 minutes. If you are arriving by an overnight train and heading straight to Kanyakumari, a quick detour to us adds very little; our Nagercoil Junction travel guide covers the station itself.
From Suchindram and Padmanabhapuram
Suchindram lies between Nagercoil and the cape, so it pairs naturally with a stop at the shop on a Kanyakumari day. Padmanabhapuram Palace is out on the Thiruvananthapuram highway at Thuckalay. Vadasery is on that side of Nagercoil, so a palace morning followed by a 4 PM pakoda stop works well. The palace is closed on Mondays; see our Padmanabhapuram Palace guide.
From Trivandrum airport
The usual route comes down the NH 66 corridor through Neyyattinkara, Parassala, Marthandam and Thuckalay. The old highway reaches Nagercoil on its north-western, Vadasery side, so we are usually an easy first stop, though drivers may take a bypass depending on traffic. If you have booked an airport transfer to Kanyakumari, ask the driver to pause on Asambu Road.
Sweet Shop Near Me Open Now? Hours and the Best Time to Visit
We are open Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with no weekly holiday. Different things are at their best at different hours, so here is what we tell friends who ask when to come:
| When | What is at its best | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Morning (from 9 AM) | Laddu rolled that morning; the day's halwa and Mysore Pak on the counter; the full range of banana chips | Gift boxes, travel packs, the widest choice of sweets |
| Afternoon | Same counter, quieter shop | Collecting a pack you ordered ahead |
| 4 PM to 8 PM | Hot onion-cashew pakoda from 4 PM; fresh jalebi batches through the evening | Evening snacks, eating on the spot |
| After 8 PM | Chips and packed items; Mysore Pak may have sold out | Last-minute souvenirs before a night train |
If you searched "mysore pak near me open now" late in the evening, message us first. Our Mysore Pak is made fresh daily and on most days sells out before we close, so we will hold a box for you if you ask.
Pakora Near Me and Evening Snacks: The 4 PM Kadai
If you have one hour to spare in Nagercoil, make it 4 PM. That is when our Vadasery pakoda comes out of the kadai, hot and crackling: gram flour, sliced onions, whole and broken cashews and fennel, fried in pure cold-pressed groundnut oil. North Indian visitors call it pakora; here it is pakoda, and it is a crisp, loose, crunchy cluster rather than a soft fritter. It sells at ₹100 per 250 g or ₹400 per kg.
The classic local order is a paper packet of pakoda in one hand and a box of fresh jalebi in the other. That is the Nagercoil evening snack habit our evening tiffin culture article describes, and it is the main reason people search for an "evening snacks shop near me" around here.
Chips Shop Near Me: Nendran Banana Chips at the Counter
Ask anyone for the famous chips shop in Nagercoil and they will mean banana chips. Ours are made from raw green Nendran bananas, sliced ultra-thin and fried in cold-pressed groundnut oil with salt and turmeric, and nothing else. People searching for a "Kerala chips shop near me" are looking for the same Nendran chips; the main difference is that Kerala shops usually fry in coconut oil and Nagercoil's older shops in groundnut oil. Our Kerala vs Nagercoil banana chips comparison explains the taste difference.
Prices: ₹100 for 250 g, ₹200 for 500 g, ₹400 per kg, and ₹1,900 for a 5 kg bulk pack. Every pack is vacuum-sealed in multi-layer food-grade pouches. See our Nendran banana chips page, and if you are comparing shops, our guide to the best banana chips in Nagercoil explains what to look for in any shop's chips, not just ours. The glass case also holds other South Indian savouries; the current list is on our Nagercoil snacks page.
Halwa Shop, Jalebi, Laddu and Mysore Pak Near Me: The Sweets Counter
All our sweets are made with pure cow ghee and no preservatives, stabilisers or artificial colours. What is on the counter:
- Wheat halwa (₹160 / 250 g, ₹640 / kg): glossy, translucent and stretchy, slow-cooked from the starch of fermented red wheat with sugar, ghee and cashews in heavy brass urulis. It goes on the flame in the morning and is sold the same day it is made, with rotating daily specials; ask at the counter for the day's variety.
- Ghee Mysore Pak (₹180 / 250 g, ₹720 / kg): the porous, melt-in-the-mouth style made from gram flour, ghee and sugar. Made fresh every day, and the sweet most likely to be gone by evening.
- Boondi and motichoor laddu (₹160 / 250 g, ₹640 / kg): rolled fresh every morning with ghee, cashews, raisins and cardamom.
- Saffron jalebi (₹120 / 250 g, ₹480 / kg): fermented batter piped into spirals, fried in ghee and soaked in saffron syrup. Fresh batches run from around 4 PM to about 8 PM.
A note for anyone who searched "yellow jalebi near me": jalebi colour depends on the shop. Many places use food colour for a bright orange. Ours gets its golden yellow-orange from saffron in the syrup and the ghee it is fried in, because we do not use artificial colours. For the full sweets range and gift boxes, see our traditional sweets page, and for the wider local scene, our guide to Nagercoil's famous sweets and sweet shops.
Cake Shop in Kanyakumari? An Honest Note
Some map listings file our shop under "cake shops", and our own photos on those listings carry that label, so people searching for a cake shop in Kanyakumari sometimes find us. To save you a wasted trip: we are a traditional South Indian sweet and snack stall. We do not bake cakes, birthday cakes or pastries. If you need a cake, look for a bakery. If what you really want is something sweet to take to a family, a box of halwa, Mysore Pak or laddu is the Nagercoil way to do it.
What Travels Well: Edible Souvenirs to Take Home
If you are buying for people back home, choose by how long your journey is. These are typical shelf lives for our products, kept sealed or airtight at room temperature, away from heat:
| Item | Keeps for | Travel verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Nendran banana chips (vacuum-packed) | 3–4 weeks sealed | Best traveller; light and crush-resistant in its pouch |
| Wheat halwa | 15–20 days | Very good; keep it upright in its box |
| Ghee Mysore Pak | 15–20 days | Good; carry in a rigid box, away from heat |
| Boondi / motichoor laddu | About 7–10 days | Good for trips of a week or so |
| Jalebi and hot pakoda | Best the same day | Eat them here, or on the train |
More storage detail, including what to do once a pack is opened, is in our snack shelf life and storage guide.

How to Pick a Good Sweet or Chips Shop, Anywhere
You will not always be near Vadasery, so here is the checklist we would use in any town. None of it needs a food science degree, only your nose and eyes.
- Look at the frying oil. If the shop fries in front of you, the oil should be golden and fairly clear. Very dark oil with persistent foam has been reused too long, and chips fried in it taste bitter and go stale quickly. Ask which oil they use; a good shop will tell you straight away.
- Smell for ghee. A sweet counter that uses real ghee smells nutty and rich as you walk in. If the Mysore Pak or laddu smells flat or waxy, the fat is probably vanaspati or a blend.
- Watch the turnover. A busy counter means trays are refilled often. Fresh chips are pale gold and snap cleanly; old chips look darker and bend before they break. Fresh halwa is glossy, not dull or sweating.
- Check the colours. Natural jalebi is golden to yellow-orange. Neon orange or fluorescent yellow sweets usually mean added colour.
- Read the label on packed chips. Raw banana, oil, salt and turmeric is all banana chips need. A long list with flavour enhancers or preservatives tells you the batch was made to sit on a shelf.
- Ask for a taste. Most traditional sweet shops in South India will happily let you try a chip or a sliver of halwa before you buy a kilo.
- Ask when the hot items come out. Every good snack shop has a fixed frying time. A shop that knows its own pakoda hour is a shop that fries fresh.
We hold ourselves to the same list: one oil for savouries (cold-pressed groundnut), pure cow ghee for sweets, no preservatives or colours, and fixed frying times. Read why we stay with groundnut oil frying if you want the reasoning.
