1. Key Highlights of the 10-Day December Festival

• Nov 24 (Kodiyetram): The festival flag bearing the image of St. Francis Xavier is ceremoniously blessed and hoisted on the tall flagpole in front of the cathedral amidst the tolling of historic century-old bells.
• Daily Novena Masses: Masses are conducted in Tamil, English, and Malayalam throughout the day (morning 6:00 AM to night 8:00 PM), with special healing services around the 1542 CE Miracle Well.
• Dec 2 (9th Night Car Procession): At around 9:00 PM, the illuminated statues of Our Lady and St. Francis Xavier are placed on three magnificent silver and golden chariots (Sapparam) and pulled around the cathedral streets.
• Dec 3 (Feast Day Pontifical High Mass & Grand Procession): The official Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier. A district-wide public holiday is declared. Solemn High Mass is celebrated in the morning, followed by the grand day procession of the sacred relics.

2. The Miracle Well & Historical Sanctuary

Devotees queue up in the inner courtyard to draw water from the freshwater well originally dug during Saint Francis Xavier’s stay in 1542 CE. The water is carried in bottles to homes across India as a symbol of protection and healing.

3. Festival Markets & Evening Fair

During the 10 days, the entire Kottar Main Road transforms into a vibrant carnival market with traditional toy stalls, sweet stalls, brassware, and South Indian food stands open late into the night.

Carrying the sacred statues of Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Michael the Archangel, the chariots are pulled by hundreds of youth through Kottar Main Road, Kambar Street, and Chettikulam amidst hymn singing, brass bands, and fireworks displays that light up the Nagercoil night sky.

These multi-story wheeled floats are covered in embossed gold and silver leaf, decorated with hundreds of delicate wooden cherubs and floral festoons, and illuminated by intricate electric lighting circuits.

Accompanied by traditional brass bands playing solemn sacred marches, church choirs singing Tamil hymns of praise, and devotees carrying glowing wax candles, the procession moves slowly through the packed streets of Kottar for over four hours, creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual devotion and community unity.
